With More Than A Pinch Of Salt

Always take an ordinary person's word with a pinch of salt. When its someone extraordinary, just a pinch won't do. Empty the jar.

By this time three quarters of a year have passed since I entered the halls of IIT-M as a student. It has certainly been a late start but better late than never.

So what I gotta do now is to fill you up on the permanent fixtures in IIT life.

Fixture 1: The food
Now most of you would have tasted bad food, but have any of you tasted bad food? I mean not only taste bad (actually awful) but be about as hygenic as something the cat brought in ( Literally the hostel cat does just that, by dropping I-dont-wanna-know-what into the huge vessels of rice and curry). As a matter of academic interest, in the first month of the academic year, an average of forty students a day started complaining of dysentry in one hostel alone. We regularly fimd bits of metal hidden in our curry, but its no problem; no metal can be harder or tougher than our special recipe roti. "Made For Water Buffaloes" methinks it says on the atta cover ( I also think that sometimes they add the cover to the flour too). Which brings me the curry. Its a good thing that Greenpeace is not so active in our part of the world, else they would be crying "oilslick" when they see us invert our nearly full katoris into the basin. I think that when George Bush was crying "chemical weapons" he really meant the food in IIT. And the extras that you pay for... to quote a friend, they are mouth-watering... that is your eat only water on certain days.

As a climax to our culinary adventures, one of my friends found a frog in his food last week, quite dead and harmless. I have since quit eating at the mess. There rests my case. Amen.

Fixture 2: The profs

They are real jokers, seriously. I bet (with some exceptions) they haven't a clue what subject they are teaching. There was this one lady who used to literally change her answers becaue we told her to, honest. They seem to all have given up on us, that is understandable. We think that all ex-IITians are allowed to become profs, they are soo bad. Class physical attendance is generally one-third of class strength, and class mental attendance is never more than three. But I really pity these people. I bet they never knew what was coming when they were offered the post of lecturer in IIT.

Fixture 3: The wildlife

IIT-M has an amazing wildlife. there are monkeys, snakes, spotted deer, blackbuck, strange insects (mainly mosquitos) and birds. The deer are truly beautiful. The monkeys are bolder than the aforementioned profs.

Fixture 4: The birds ( or their absence)

I mean the non-feathered variety or I'd be redundant. We have a miserable lack of female eye-candy here. 35 girls to 515 boys does not sound too cool. And the ones here sre more turkey or dodo quality than chick quality. This is one of our chief cribs.

So that describes the permanent things in IIT. For updates on temporary phenomena, watch this space...

Till next time

Eventful, if nothing else

Its been three quarters of a year since the fateful day of the IIT-JEE '05 results. And man has it been an eventful one. This is a blog tracing events, past, present and maybe future of life at this campus.
