With More Than A Pinch Of Salt

Always take an ordinary person's word with a pinch of salt. When its someone extraordinary, just a pinch won't do. Empty the jar.

My, that's a big mistake...

Yech, yuck and sigh... that was seven months of mess food. Food that makes for an ... er... dogly feast. And that was seven months borne with relative good humour and a grim resolve, waiting for the day of destiny, 1st april 2004.

For, on that date was due a relief... a himalayan one. Now poor chaps in ganga and mandak would be fed the same delights served by RR caterers at saras and godav. This was cause for celebration, and rowdy ones involving food-fights (with medicos close at hand in case a misguided chapati caused concussion). So it was with a mood of jubilation that we entered the (admittedly impressive) building on that morning. And we sniffed expectantly.

That will suffice. No gory details. It's hard enough to keep in the food as it is.

In a nutshell, NO IMPROVEMENT, NO CHANGE.

Wait, did i say no change? Well we all now have the admirable physical exercise of walking from our hostels at 4 for a cup of (salty???) tea. And for breakfast at7, lunch at 12, heck, for water at midnight...(water dispensers phut in my hostel).

Why on earth a group of grown men would allow building 9-crore worth of real estate for god-knows what reason is way beyond me. They dont even change the goddamn caterers. Its not like we eat the cement, you know (or wait, do we?)

People argue saying there are no frogs here yet. I say yet is an operative word. And there is the concept of the mess card. Yellow monstrous thing too big to fit in a wallet too small to justify a folder. Mine ripped to shreds already, and frankly I'm relieved. I have no plans of replacing it, I'll just chow out everyday. What exactly justifies Rs 500 for a new one is a widespread mystery. But then again we paid our mess bill at hostel mess for food( ahem) and i wager this card would not have tasted worse than that stuff.

Also we have the concept of south Indian(C2) and North Indian(C1) mess . ROTFLMAO. As one of ma friends succintly put it, C2-C1=sambhar. Or is it? What sambhar? Oh that brown lacklustre liquid? i thought that was rasam...

Guys, I never thought it would come to this, but I wish I had my old mess back.

PS, No dhaba to escape to now, as a part of the global conspiracy to hinder Indian progress
